Al-Shallal temporary dumpsite in Al-Nuseirat, Gaza Strip, has become a critical waste disposal point after October 2023, due to the war and the inaccessibility of official landfills in the Access Restricted Areas (ARA). The site currently receives 150–200 m³ of mixed waste daily under unsafe, unregulated conditions.
Objectives & Scope
The project, led by UNDP in partnership with JSC-KRM and Al-Nuseirat Municipality, aims to stabilize and reshape the site, introduce drainage and leachate control, enforce access measures, and create a safer environment for nearby communities.
Key Outputs
Engineered reshaping of waste mounds with safe slopes.
Additional cell with basic leachate collection.
Perimeter fencing, controlled access, and daily soil cover.
Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for safe operations.
Expected Impact
Improved safety, reduced pollution, increased capacity (up to 61,000 m³), and continuity of waste services until long-term solutions are viable.
