Socioeconomic Assessment for Fishery Sector in Gaza

The Gaza Resilience Project (GRP) aims to strengthen community resilience in Gaza by focusing on renewable energy, green economy, and essential infrastructure. Given the critical role of the fishery sector in food security and livelihoods, GRP is supporting efforts to address its challenges, including restricted fishing zones, financial barriers, and inadequate infrastructure. To guide targeted interventions, GIZ, under GRP, is conducting an assessment of fishing boats’ technical conditions and the socioeconomic status of fishers, ensuring sustainable solutions that enhance income opportunities and economic resilience.

Scope of Study

The assessment a provided a comprehensive understanding of the fishing sector’s needs by focusing on two key objectives. First, it  produced a verified list of fishing boats, detailing their technical condition, repair requirements, and ownership structures to guide the development of an operational manual for investment support in boat rehabilitation. Second, it conducted a household-level socioeconomic survey covering all fishers—both boat owners and non-boat owners—as well as workers in the fishing sector. This survey generated a baseline socioeconomic dataset, providing valuable insights into income levels, employment conditions, and key challenges faced by fishing communities. The findings will help shape investment support strategies, ensuring targeted interventions that enhance economic stability and resilience in Gaza’s fishery sector.
